Meet Freemasonry

Sunday June 1, 2014

Human Rights, a Freemasonic obedience, is organizing a public conference today at the town hall of Fort-de-France. The theme addressed, “Being a Freemason Today... Why choose Human Law? » .

Freemasonry suffers from a lot of prejudice, especially in Martinique. In the interests of transparency, Martinicans are invited to a public conference. For the occasion Michel Meley, the president of the French Federation of Human Rights, will host a public conference to demystify and remove doubts.

Sometimes compared to a sect, the Masonic Order of Human Rights wishes to break the most persistent clichés.

Like other obediences, it does not prevent religious practice. It is possible to meet Catholics, Muslims, Jews and even Buddhists there.

However, there is a hierarchy, as in any association, to enable it to function properly.

Another cliché: the link between Freemasonry and politics.

The Order of Human Rights claims not to be involved in politics, however it is possible that politicians are Freemasons.

It accepts everyone without distinction of social class and origins. Since its creation (1893) this Freemasonic obedience has been for equality of the sexes.

However, one condition must be met: “Be free and of good morals”. That is to say, behave in a way that does not go against morality and the law. The aim of this order is to allow its members to “work on their mutual improvement”. And like many Freemasons, they respect certain values: freedom, equality, fraternity, justice, tolerance. Once a Freemason, everyone is free to say so or not. It's not a secret or taboo.

- To find out more about this obedience of Freemasonry, meet Monday June 2 on the 6th floor of Fort-de-France town hall from 6:30 p.m.

In figures and dates

In 1882, the Les Libres Penseurs du Pecq lodge initiated Maria Deraisme. The latter met Georges Martin and founded Le Droit Humain with him. Hence the diversity of this obedience. It became international in 1920. Today it is present in 54 countries. It is made up of 30,000 members, including 17,000 in France. Mixed obedience, it is made up of one third men and two thirds women. Martinique has 1000 members.
